When did you start using redbox, how did you find out about us, and how close is the redbox you usually go to?

I started using redbox after my sister mentioned it to me. She said how great and cheap it was for new releases, so I later looked into it. I would say I started a year ago? The nearest one I go to is less than a mile away at Jewel-Osco!

AlyL_Bourne Are there certain types of movies that you prefer to see in the theater versus at home? And then how about the other way around?

I normally like to see big budget/box-office hits in the theater, and also comedies. I like the movie theater better overall, because it normally makes me more into the movie and feel more emotion and excitement. At home there’s distractions, like my parents, my sister… the cats… people yelling — really annoying things. So if the movie we watch at home has too much talking or silence, something usually happens, whether my mom starts talking or people get up and move around or get food, et cetera. I watch indie movies at home or movies that may not be worth the money to see them in theater!

You’ve got to lay down the law that no one’s allowed to interrupt your experience when you’re watching a DVD at home, methinks. When you’re at the cineplex, would you rather have the show be crowded or nearly empty… or does that depend on the movie?

It definitely depends on the movie. Empty theaters are classic for horror films. Packed theaters are great for action, comedies or animated films. I love when the audience gets into a movie and laughs or cheers, or they clap at the end (only for a good movie, otherwise I get mad if they clap). Sorry, but some movies don’t deserve more than the money paid to see them!

What kind of experience do you like or hope to have when you watch a movie?

I try not to expect things from movies, because I *hate* being disappointed, but I can’t help it when there’s hype, commercials, and ads everywhere.

FifthelementYou mean like with a little movie coming out tomorrow called Avatar, perhaps? Now it’s time for the Big Question: what five movies would you want with you on a deserted island (deserted… except for a TV and a DVD player and one electrical outlet)?

The Fifth Element – This is one of my favorite action films and one of the best Bruce Willis films in my opinion. This was probably his prime of action movies. It has cool future ideas/inventions, action, comedy, and an interesting story line.

The Wedding Singer - One of Adam Sandler’s best comedies with a good story line (no way!). Drew Barrymore is tolerable in this one, too! Acting takes the backseat as Sandler acts crazy and can get away with it from what happens to him at his respectable age. And set in the 80s makes it better!

Zoolander – Okay, I know this one is a bit crazy, but it’s still pretty funny regardless! I don’t think this movie got enough credit for a dumb comedy. This is one of the few times I like Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson. Will Ferrell is OK in this one, too. Zoolander-stiller-wilsonI think comedy is good to watch over and over again if you’re stuck on an island.

I am iffy on the last two. I would maybe choose Spider-Man 2 and a Disney one, like Aladdin. I am still a sucker and fan of the Spider-Man movies, and Aladdin is probably my favorite Disney film. I think happier and funny movies would be good choices on a stranded island, though I do like many other films.

Let’s talk about more of your favorites, as in: who’s your favorite actor?

After much debating, I chose Leonardo DiCaprio. He is an amazing actor and chooses movies with GREAT story lines and amazing characters. He has great range as an actor, and I don’t think I’ve disliked any of the movies he’s been in that I’ve seen. Whenever I see a preview starring him, he instantly makes me interested to see what kind of movie he’s in next. Departed I don’t think there’s a role he couldn’t do! He stars in one of my favorite movies, The Departed.

In second, Clive Owen. He’s a decent actor, and I really liked him in Shoot ‘Em Up. I also enjoyed Closer. Plus the whole, Brit thing. He is great at getting the ladies!

You have a lot to look forward to with Leo in Shutter Island and Inception next year, then. And you know I love me some Clive, so I agree with you wholeheartedly on that one. Now, who’s your favorite actress?

I don’t think I have a favorite actress yet. I do enjoy Zooey Deschanel ((500) Days of Summer was a great movie and probably my favorite with her — so far), and Mila Kunis (She’s still sub-par as an actress but I think she has great promise, and I want to see her in The Book of Eli). I like Rachel McAdams every now and then, depending on the movie (she did well in The Time Traveler’s Wife).

Let’s get catty for a bit. Are there any actors or actresses you could do without?

In order of least hated to most hated:
3rd Place: Jennifer Aniston
2nd Place: Megan Fox
First Place: Shia LaBeouf – My winner! …

I think I have valid reasons as to why I can’t stand them:
I don’t think any of them can act very well (especially Fox), and I don’t think they deserve to be in as many movies as they are in (especially big-budget films). LaBeouf really is lucky to be in an age range that has so few male actors to compete against. Think about it; there’s NO other young male actor that can take on the roles he’s gotten, unless they get a new guy (which they SHOULD). I really can’t stand him, and it’s gotten personal! Not really. Megan Fox… enough said. Aniston Jennifer Aniston just belongs in… no movie. She was fine in the sitcom Friends, but she really can’t act well enough to be movie material. She’s not a looker. She’s okay in comedies, but I wouldn’t put her in anything past that. I’m sure I could go into painful details about each of them, but I really don’t have the time to waste!

I take it you are not a Shiantologist, then? Hee hee. OK, since you don’t want to waste any more time on those guys, let’s switch gears. Have you ever waited in line for hours for a movie and if so, what was it?

Yes, I’ve waited in line for many superhero movies. Spider-Man is still my favorite and then Iron Man. The newer Incredible Hulk film took me by surprise, and now I am a fan of it as well (this coming from the girl that HATED the Hulk for ages! Thanks Edward Norton!). Now who’s going to be Captain America so I won’t dislike him? I still have issues with Superman, too. =(

Ha. Captain America is currently still up for grabs, so unfortunately we can’t help you prepare your anti-hate campaign just yet. So we covered waiting in line, now how about attending a midnight screening — have you ever done that?

Spiderman I have but now I don’t remember for what movies. I know I did for the first Spider-Man movie and then saw it again the next day. It was a very, VERY bad idea. Not only is the movie super long but lack of sleep and well, I can’t watch the same movie THAT soon! I should’ve known better!

What’s the best film you’ve seen to date in 2009?

I don’t think many movies this year really sparked something inside of me; I feel like there haven’t been that many great movies this year so far. So, I had to look through some lists for an overview of movies, and I would say my favorite so far has been (500) Days of Summer. I didn’t think it would be anything special, but I like the actors and gave it a shot. It turned out to be a refreshing type of love story that seemed realistic. Sure, there’s some goofy elements, but that’s what made it for me. I think this film touched many people, and it shows from how many good ratings it got! I recently saw Star Trek, and I would say that movie definitely was out of the ballpark. I was never quite the Star Trek fan, but the movie captured the new generation and made it, well, awesome! I wish I saw it in the theater.

OK, here’s our last question for you: Are there any upcoming movies you’re really looking forward to?

Lovely bones The Lovely Bones – I never read the book but the preview surprised me. It looks interesting, though most of the story has been revealed. My sister said the book was very good, so we may both read it and then see it. Some of the imagery reminded me of Big Fish for some reason.

Spider-Man 4 – Well, I HAVE to see it. I admit to liking the whole series, though they were too long at certain points. I don’t bash the 3rd movie, because I loved how funny and emo it was. =) I think people take superhero movies too far sometimes – I know it didn’t seem like Peter Parker’s character, but it’s still just a movie more oriented toward kids! I won’t let the debate start again, so I’ll be quiet! I am looking forward to the next Iron Man, and I want to see Brothers (It looks freaky), and I kinda want to see Did You Hear About the Morgans? (Looks funny and chick flick-ish).

Oh lordy, I don’t know if I agree with you on Did You Hear About the Morgans?, but I’m right there with you on Iron Man 2. Thanks so much for taking the time to talk with us and for being such an active part of the redblog family.

Thanks for the interview! =)

As always, you can review all of our Readers Who Rock profiles here. We’re going to take a break from interviewing our commenters for the next two weeks during holiday madness, but we will be posting a Writers Who Rock piece on Locke next week, so remember to submit your questions for him in the meantime.

I have to admit, I’m not a fan of Hugh Grant. He always seems smarmy to me. I agree about Spider Man 3. It got spoofy in a good way.

I dunno Fiivoen, I still think Venom should have been expanded and not made so quick of a villian…
The best part of Spidey 3 to me was Sandman, especially the effects…but throwing all of the stuff together felt really forced and I was severely disappointed, especially after so enjoying Spiderman 2.

I sort of want to see the Did you Hear about the Morgans cause i like Hugh Grant and I like Sarah Jessica Parker, but doesn’t this movie remind you of For Richer or For Poorer with Tim Allen? Instead of the IRS we now have the Mob. I’m just saying.

True, but Parker as venom was BRILLIANT! Think about it, if an uber-geek boyscout suddenly was even more powerful and felt like a bad boy, he’d do the cheesy dance thing, too! I know I would. The cheese works BECAUSE Parker is such a geek!

Nice call on Zoolander. You’re right, by the way, Aladdin is the best Disney movie.

As a psuedo Spiderman Geek, I believe there is a slight error…Technically Parker was never Venom…it was called the Venom symbiote, but the villian Venom was not created until it merged with Eddie Brock…

    Great post as always!
    (500) Days of Summer was pretty funny with the literal night and day differences with the various stages of the experiences.
Also great movie choices, Fifth Element is one of my faves as well. Chris Tucker as Ruby Rhod was genius!

Who doesn’t love the 5th Element? Seriously good movie.

    (500) Days of Summer was a drama not a comedy. Movies either have to make us laugh or cry. I like Jen Aniston’s acting but Amy Adams (Julie & Julia), oh yeah.
    Great write-up though!

What movie were you seeing moviegoer? It was an offbeat comedy…if you thought it was a drama, you must have been in the wrong theatre…

Well, Matthew S.-I was seeing (500) Days of Summer in a Marcus theatre. I thought it was more a drama because there wasn’t much comedy, there was a lot of drama aspects in the film.
I think (500) Days of Summer is a offbeat comedy, too and the drama was ordinary not until the end.
All the theatres in town had the same movie, I don’t get how you mean I must have been in the wrong theatre, Matthew S.

Now now, this is not the place for arguing, you’re ruining Aly’s page. Just compromise and call the movie a dramedy.

Alright, Trever L.- we will call “(500) Days of Summer” a dramedy! Sorry, for all the arguing of (500) Days of Summer”.

    Dramedy it is…
    *Shakes hands*
To lighten the mood a little with a bad joke…
So, what’s the difference between a Roman Tragedy and a Roman Comedy?
In the Roman Tragedy, everyone dies, in the Roman Comedy, everyone dies Happy.

Matthew S. – thanks for the “dramedy” theory! I would go wtih Roman Comedy, everyone dies happy.
