You Talkin’ to Me? The Freeze Frame Answers

Untouchables_deniro2 Not everyone was resting over the holidays.  Rebecca was hard at work on the Freeze Frame challenge, and was the first to identify these stills as being from Meet the Parents, Cape Fear and The Untouchables.  Perhaps she can make her aluminum foil trophy out of what's been helping keep Thanksgiving leftovers fresh in the fridge? After all, recycling's the word nowadays, right?  Just a thought.

In second place was the ever-vigilant Donna, and Jason (not Jason/Fiirvoen, but another, new Jason) came in third.

As for the link between the films, it was of course Robert De Niro, who let us (and Ben Stiller… eventually) into his Circle of Trust as Jack Payne in Meet the Parents, scared the bejeezus out of us as Max Cady in Cape Fear, and reigned over the Windy City as Al Capone in The Untouchables (which, despite living in Chicago for the last 12 years, I hadn't seen until a few weeks ago).  Those who get to hammer out Common Thread Buttons o' Pride for themselves are: Rebecca and Donna again, as well as Michelle, MrsGrim88, Millar74, Brant Miller and Ian.  Congrats to all of our winners — I sincerely hope that after exerting the effort to examine the stills, you all went back to napping on the couch or assumed a primo position in front of the ol' boob tube.

This Friday, De Niro's back on the big screen in Everybody's Fine (a remake of a 1990 Italian film, Stanno Tutti Bene, from Giuseppe Tornatore) which I might have been more interested in if its trailer didn't have the worst voiceover ever.

You talkin' to me, cheesy voiceover guy?

One time I took the train home to Wisconsin from Kankakee. There was a stopover at Union Station and I made a point of walking around to find the staircase from The Untouchables where they had the shootout and the baby fell down the stairs in the carriage.

I take Amtrak out of Union Station all the time (was just there today)… sadly, they’ve removed all the old-time high-back benches from the Grand Hall, so it doesn’t have as much of that great classic feel, but yes, the stairs are still there :)
Once, about a decade ago, I was coming back from Iowa on Amtrak, carrying an old-school (that is, massive) printer on my back, and slogging up those Grand Hall “Untouchable” stairs, one at a time, thinking all the time, “Why doesn’t Andy Garcia just shoot me in the frakking head?”
