Bloggers Talk About redbox Etiquette

by Redbox | Jun 3rd, 2009 | 2:44PM | Filed under: Redbox Insider

Redbox noticed that some of its blogger customers have some
things to say about how people behave when they're renting from redbox. Some
have even gone so far as to develop their own sets of rules…

Here's what three have to say:

Redbox couldn't help but wonder what redblog readers have to
say about redbox etiquette and lines. Have any rules you'd like to add to these
lists? Any great stories you'd like to share?

I think Redbox is a great idea, but it seems like they could alleviate some of the frustration people are having at the boxes. Where I live we have several boxes in town and it seems like all the machines are set to run very slow, especially dispensing your movie or if you have ever observed “Redbox etiquette” and let people return movies in front of you, the “Your movie has been returned successfully” screen stays on for what seems to be a very long time, the person is usually in their car and driving off before it goes away. It seems like to me speeding these machines up would only help them make more money and annoy people less.
One other thing they could do to improve the redbox is put a reserved movie pickup/return movie only console on the side. That way people who want to browse the selections can do so and not feel rushed by people in a hurry.
Or I suppose they could just do Delivery! :-)

In the meantime, Redbox could charge a higher rental charge (which it should do in general anyhow!) for those movies which aren’t reserved prior to arriving at the kiosk. Another suggestion is that customers aren’t smart to arrive less than an hour before than 9 p.m. deadline for returning DVDs. Maybe, for that matter, there is something that Redbox would want to do to somehow stagger the deadline for returning DVDs; if the Dept. of Motor Vehicles and the Social Security Administration can spread out the dates, why can’t Redbox?

I loved all the tips, but so far I haven’t had any problems. Only a few times has there been a line when I’m picking up a movie – guess I’m just going at the right times!

I’ve been using Redbox for quite some time now and I have to say that my experiences have been overwhlemingly positive. Yes, I have experienced the undecided couple perusing every single movie title. Even the frazzled mom letting her kids argue over whether they want Miley or Zac. But for the most part, in my experience, Redboxers have been considerate in their use of the machine. I have seen countless people let others go first if they are just returning, especially before the 9pm deadline. I have witnessed groups of strangers trade free redbox codes at the machine, so we can all benefit. I myself have let numerous people go before me, and have tried to make my choices quick in the event I do not know in advance which movie I’d like to rent.
The best tip for avoiding lines is to be selective with the times you use Redbox. I have found Tuesdays to be busy and a lot of the movies to be out – this is because Redbox releases new movies every Tuesday. So, if youre looking for the newest release, wait til Thursday when the Tuesday Redboxers have returned their DVD’s. Friday and Saturday nights are also busy, because everyone is trying to get a movie for the weekend. And lastly, try to avoid the 8-9pm timeframe, when everyone is trying to return their dvd before getting another night’s rental charge.

Another thing that might be cool is a Drive-Thru redbox.

only once did i have a real issue… with a soccer mom with four kids. each kid wanted a different movie, but apparently the mom only had $1 left on her credit card, so only one movie could be chosen. i literally stood there for 10 minutes waiting patiently, then gave up, went and did some shopping, came back about 5 minutes later, and she still had not rented a movie. go to freaking blockbuster or use VOD at home!!!!!! i am generally a very easy going person, but for some reason, this absurd inconsiderateness nearly made me explode.

My family member and I have been using Redbox for the past three months and it has been great. We haven’t had any problems but the down fall is when we return a movie and you slide it in the slot thing and on the screen says “Your movie has been returned sucessfully” stays on the screen for quite a few minutes and we usually wait for it until gets back to the normal screen. We do Redbox about every weekend and in the summer we do it like almost everyday, rent and return, it’s easy. Redbox is better then the Blockbuster stores, no offense. Another great thing about Redbox is you have most of the new releases!
Another good idea is have a receipt coming out after renting the movie, like have a receipt slots and that’s where the receipt comes out.
My family is hooked on Redbox. Thank you Redbox for letting me rent the movies.

Like most other people I am very patient until it comes to blatent disregard for others and I believe it will only be a matter of time before a physical altercation erupts at one of the redbox sites.
I am confident Redbox will come up with technical improvements to alleviate the “browser” issues. Perhaps having a station for browsing and a seperate slot for returns or pre-ordered movies.
