Tuesday Threes : The Answer

Once again you guys and gals came through with flying colors — we've got a hundred or so correct answers, so I'll go ahead and wrap it up.

But first, we must crown today's winner! It was Lindsay who was first, and it is Lindsay who now has the right–nay, the duty–to go make herself one super-spectacular homemade construction-paper medal.

I tried to make this one a bit tougher, and judging by the increased number of valiant-but-erroneous guesses, I'd say I at least threw a few of you off the scent.

Still not sure what film featured Dwayne Johnson, Justin Timberlake, and Amy Poehler? Then simply highlight the area below to illuminate the wondrous Inviso-Text!

It sure was Southland Tales, director Richard Kelly's massive "what the HELL?!?!" follow-up to Donnie Darko. I don't think our little Inviso-Text could handle the amount of text it would take to somehow try to explain WHAT Southland Tales is actually ABOUT, but if any of you want to take a shot at it in the comments, please by all means be my guest! I will say this–I kinda love Southland Tales. It's a tremendous hot mess (if you think Watchmen is hard to follow…), and it's full of completely off-kilter performances, but darn it, I sometimes really enjoy watching a filmmaker go full speed right into the wall.

As for the actors, Dwayne Johnson, star of this weekend's Race to Witch Mountain, and of course the ring artist formerly known as The Rock, plays Boxer Santaros, the hero of this dystopic, satiric future, an action-movie star caught up in some serious corporate-governmental trans-dimensional weirdness. Justin Timberlake is Private Pilot Abilene, a former soldier with ties to a larger conspiracy, and who delivers what is maybe the film's best (only decent?) scene: a lip-sync video for The Killer's "All These Things That I've Done." Amy Poehler has a bit part in the film in one of it's many oddball minor roles. (Frankly, I can't recall which one she is–in my head I'm confusing her with her predecessor on SNL, Cheri Oteri who is also in the film, playing a revolutionary.)

(Sarah Michelle Geller, Sean Williams Scott, and Mandy Moore are also in the film, along with dozens of other familiar faces.)

Well now I'm getting the hankering to go see Southland Tales again–I'll let the rest of you hash it between those who have actually seen it, as to whether you would actually recommend it to others. It is not the easiest, most viewer-friendly film around, and like I said, even though I like it, I admit it's a totally fascinating mess of a film. Any die-hard Southland Tales fans out there who want to step up in its defense?

What’s it about? It’s supposed to be an interpretation of the Book of Revelations. That coulda been done a little clearer – especially since most people aren’t all that familiar with the source material.
