I'm eating crow this morning because — despite what I considered to be a poorly thought out marketing campaign — Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail has pulled in over $41 million since its debut on Friday and snagged box-office bragging rights along the way. In a close race for second place were Taken (the victor) and Coraline, which both added another $11 million and change to their running tallies.
He's Just Not That Into You came in fourth, and last night's big winner, Slumdog Millionaire, jumped up the charts to swipe the number five position. That's probably because over six hundred new screens playing the rags-to-riches tale were just added around the country. I'd bet that with all of its OscarĀ® statues now in tow, the kids from Mumbai are going to be hanging around theaters for quite some time.
Compared to Madea, the only other new release of the weekend, Fired Up, performed pretty dismally. It earned a mere $6 million in ticket sales and secured itself the number nine position. I'd have to think that it's all downhill from here for the male cheerleaders… but hopefully they've learned a thing or two about being perpetually perky, so they won't get too depressed about it.
If Fired Up is on one end of the Successful Film Spectrum, then The Dark Knight is surely on the other. This past week, the caped crusader rode his Batpod across the $1 biiiillllion revenue mark. Only three other films have been admitted to The Billion-Dollar Movie Club, and they are: Titanic (no surprise), The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (no surprise) and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (huh?).
Dare to dream, Fired Up, dare to dream.

I LOVED IT! I would also like to recognize Derek Luke. He has become one of my favorite actors. He has been great from the beginning, and he only gets better with time. I appreciate the fact that Mr. Perry has used some of the best talent in the industry. Mr. Perry I pray that God continues to bless you exceeding, abundantly, far beyond what you could ask or think.

Okay, no I did not see the movie yet but am looking forward to it. I just rented the play version “Madea Goes To Jail” and I loved it and “Diary of a Mad Black Woman”. I also frequently watch House of Payne. I am totally white and I totally relate to and love Tyler Perry. It is so refreshing to have something to watch that is not just full of trash and bad language! Truth is truth, I don’t care what ethnic background you come from. I don’t care for rap but really like soul music. I just think of it as different folks for different folks. You go Tyler Perry and keep up the good work!
To the comment about someone having something to say negative just because it is about “BLACKS” that in itself is a racist remark. Some people just have to say something negative and yes some people are either racists and ignorant. Everything is not for everybody and it does not always have to do with race.

Ooops correction, “Different strokes for different folks”

I thought the movie was great. A little predictable in some parts but aren’t most movies are today. And to Veronica, please be sure to let us know when your comedy will be released. Hopefully a few stupid people (as you say) will help you out in the box office as well.

It takes alot to make me laugh and this movie w/Madea did just that. I LMAO, it was very funny. However; the movie is not just focused on Madea. The movie made you laugh, sad, happy, mad and the ending was satisfying. A great cast of actors/actresses.
