Tron 2 Gets Its Man

How ya like me now, Gosling? It’s still not clear what the Tron sequel is actually going to be called, but at least we now know who’s in the lead role: Garrett Hedlund.  He beat out the likes of Ryan Gosling, Star Trek‘s new Captain Kirk, Chris Pine, and Cloverfield‘s Michael Stahl-David. Never heard of him?  You’re not alone.

But since I was one of the few people who actually saw the big screen adaptation of the bestselling fantasy novel Eragon (and thought it was halfway decent — it takes a lot for me to hate on anything related to dragons), I recognized Hedlund from his relatively small role as the is-he-good-or-is-he-evil Murtagh in that film.  Others might know him from Friday Night Lights (the movie, not the TV series), Troy or Georgia Rule.  But clearly, he’s not a household name at this point. That actually gives me hope that Tron’s production team is confident in their script and doesn’t feel they need big superstars to help the film succeed.  Although Garrett does have a Zac Efron-meets-young-Leo-Dicaprio look goin’ on.

He’ll be joining two other up-and-comers, Olivia Wilde and Beau Garrett, in the tale of a computer program gone rogue.

Fans of the original have reason to be excited, too: both Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner will be back in some capacity for the reboot.  (I don’t know about you, but when I think Bruce Boxleitner, I don’t think Tron, I think Scarecrow and Mrs. King.  They just don’t make ‘em like that anymore.)

Filming is set to start in a mere few months, so I’m sure we’ll be up to our ears in more Tron gossip very, very soon.  I hope Hedlund enjoys his last days of relative anonymity…
