The Dog Better Make an Appearance

Hands down, the best game token. Take that, Top Hat!A collective "Huh?" could be heard around the world when the official word broke early this morning that yes, Ridley Scott really is going to lead up an effort to bring the board game Monopoly to the big screen.

I’m calling it right now: Ants in the Pants: The Movie is next.  You know that game rocked the house!  While they’re at it, Hasbro and Universal will probably find a way to make a story out of Don’t Spill the Beans, yet another one of my favorite games from childhood.

Seriously, with the lack of originality plaguing Hollywood lately, these movies might actually happen one day, because film versions of the Ouija Board (???) and Battleship ARE in the works.  And let’s not forget about 1985′s Clue

But I digress.  Back to Monopoly… apparently Scott would like the movie to have a futuristic feel. I know I’m in the minority here, but as much as I just seemingly ripped on the idea of turning board games into movies a few sentences ago, I do think that there is the potential for a Monopoly movie made by Scott to be cool.  Unfortunately, there’s a larger chance that it will be ridiculous.

All eyes will be on Ridley’s upcoming sci-fi project, The Forever War, because if that one fails miserably, then I doubt there will be much hope for Monopoly.  And you know what that means… Rich Uncle Pennybags will send Scott directly to JAIL.

It is hard to imagine Monopoly as a good movie plot, but I thought Clue was really good. An excellent comedy.

I think you hit the nail on the head when you said that there is a chance (however small) that this movie could be cool, but there is a much larger chance that it will be ridiculous. I concur. I’m also amazed at the fact that Battleship and The Ouija Board games are being made into movies.
Maybe I’ll go into the filmmaking business…it seems as though the talent and ideas are dwindling in that area these days!
Anyway, I found a post on Peterman’s Eye about classic games like Monopoly and I found it to be a great read. Thought I’d share:

I am so confused by this. Monopoly with a futuristic feel? We’re talking about the guy who made Alien and Bladerunner. [Jeez].

Wait a minute! You can’t knock clue, that movie was actually really entertaining, funny and it had different endings released at different theatres which is just cool in my book.
